yeah, i know i'm spamming...but a friend of mine that i met at the midatlantic laptop battle just got a monthly show in baltimore (that of which i'm trying to help him with) and i was seeing if any of you guys could make it out. also looking for people to play. he just started inviting people today but i'm already on the bill for the first night. information on this is at www.baltitronic.net if you want to play one of these nights, i'm sure he'd be cool with that being that the ones that can make it to the shows would be "local" anyway (as far as being from delaware etc...shit, he has contacts in wilmington so it's no big deal). i'm checking the place out in a couple weeks but from what i see on the website, it looks fucking awesome. anyway, just bringing that to the east coast attention. that is all.

9 Weeks--Process Metaphor

I read this post today, and it reminded me of similar processes of creative thinking. I've had writing professors who would hand out an object at the beginning of the semester and all of the papers to be written during the course would be about that object alone, nothing else. What's interesting is how this process tends to sharpen our abilities to define, analyze, and reform our ways of thinking and producing new objects for discussion. For instance, write a 3-5 page paper about a white, un-lined, single sheet of 8x11 paper.

So while it seems many of us are doing various projects on our own, developing new ideas--let's all step into the dojo together on something. If people are up for this project, let me know and I'll add a subsite to my webpage and set up accounts. Proposed rule: each of us picks one sound or sonic idea, and for the next 9 weeks (approx 3 months) we will output one minute (minimum) of audio and upload it to the site for peer review. Let's see how this exercise affects our every day practice of sound production, ways we think about constucting a piece: what are its referents; what can be taken from how we use sound to produce affects; what are the questions, paradoxes, tensions, and contradictions we are trying to resolve--how effective are they, how can we make them moreso?

Please join us at 527 Main Street in Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday, March 25 from 9 pm to midnight for Lafayette's inaugural broadcast via the autonomous radio station Audio Relay, which was designed and built by Chicago's Brennan McGaffey for Temporary Services.

This event is open to the public, which is encouraged to bring:

Any sounds you have made and would like to broadcast
An FM radio – to receive and amplify the local area broadcast
CDs – if you would like to trade sounds with others at the CD burning stations

On FM 88.9, the Audio Relay will send the sounds of local artists over the airwaves and into a small area of Lafayette.

The following days will feature non-commercial sounds by artists from Europe, North America and South America, broadcast intermittently from different parts of Greater Lafayette, always between 9 pm and 12 am. This is an attempt to widen the scope of Lafayette's local radio, which is currently limited to classic rock, top ten pop charts, top ten classical music and plenty of religion.

this is the most fun light synth, i've ever played. Freeware! I can totally imagine myself getting to know it and playing it like an instrument. Within 5 minutes i linked up all the parameters to my 32 knob midi controller and i started randomly turning the knobs. I immidiately received feedback as to what i was controlling. There is also a master section that can't be midi controlled yet, but apparently it will be in the next release.
Anyone with a midi controller should try this thing out, just put some good music on and play with it.
i'll see if i can record some video of it and post it up.

im going to be playing on radio friday night. anybody recommend that i play any particular tracks? I'm pretty bad at judging my music. One day i think a song is crap, the next day i'm huddled around it like a warm campfire. Most of my most i relize is passable at best, do any songs stand out to you as deserving of the airwaves?
I'm starting out my set with three dnb tempo tracks; 1 new one, and then vostek communications followed by palm trees and sun dust. after that, i have no idea.

I am writing this thesis paper and I am trying to describe
a specific mood / atmosphere / feeling that for lack of
better words, is a type of “futuristic deja vu.” To be more
specific, its a genral feeling of otherworldliness that
could only lack description because of its “not yet-ness,”
although it seems strangely familiar.

Typically a SCI-FI strategy, it’s not a pre-cognitive
representation, nor is it post-cognitive. Rather, it’s more
like perpendicularly cognitive. It’s usually characterized
by a sense of stillness and sterility, but it is often
visually complex and vastly encoded.

Certain things that come to mind are:
-The video and graphic work of Meta
-The paintings of Inka Essenhigh (more here)
-The sculpture of Sarah Sze and Lee Bontecou
-The general atmosphere of Aeon Flux, some of Moebius' illustrations and practically the entirety of Tron.
- And of course, the music of Autechre.

I am certain this type of art and/or feeling I am going after is a form of escapism, but for this paper the phrase or word choice needs to be discussed/framed intelligently. I guess there's a
sense of cybernetic realism to all of this, but I was
wondering if there is actually a term or genre for this type
of work, ambiance, etc.

I think what I am getting at is, how one sees things
that do not necessarily have a cultural reference in time,
but can still label them as “futuristic.”

Like seriously, what the fuck does that mean? It’s
interesting how “futuristic” style things are often
ingrained into our visual cultural lexicon, but are often
associated with limitations of a media or technology… (enter
in the post-apocalyptic dialogue related to futurism)

Anyways, I’m not sure if that is clear.

I guess there’s definitely a degree of cognitive dissonance
imbedded in there.

Not the same, but somewhat similar is narapoia , a word coined in an Alan Nelson short story.

tonight i experimented with making an eggplant potato broccolli curry.
Damn tasty, but there is room for improvement of course. I ended up overcooking the broccolli (i like it to be quite crispy) and I used japanese rice noodle instead of standard rice, which was a bit odd.
I used a canned concentrate and mixed it with coconut milk; haven't yet delved into the art of creating curry from scratch.
anyone have any curry secrets or success stories?

Yeah yeah we've all heard about how V-day is made up by the greeting card companies and whatnot, but besides that, it undeniably makes you feel differently than other days, right? I mean, there is a certain vibe in the air, and it can make you feel dandy as a lion, or completely shitty and angry at every smiling couple you see. The girls at the UofA campus sure were dressed to impress today. Heads held high, lots of pinks and whites and frilly accessories. Over lunch I overheard a group of girls flaunt the fact that its "singles awareness day" which made me chuckle, and it also made me wnat to apporach them...Alas, my lack of seizing the day quickly ended that train of thought.
In conclusion, I have to say that our instinct to couple is quite strange, especially in a social context, where it becomes quite far removed from the root of the ritual, that which is to procreate. I mean, there are lots of species that have strange and even ridiculous mating dances to attract the opposite sex, but the by-products of the human version are downright bewildering if viewed from the outside... yet as a human, I have to admit I find it extremely endearing.

Regarding the 'club' jams, i will have to admit i've been listening to A LOT of psytrance. Maybe its something to do with the west coast, but this music has been feeling good for me recently. Most of it really sucks horribly and sounds completely contrived, but the best examples of the genre really hit me on all levels. Furthermore, it is a sustainable feeling, unlike that which the drum n bass genre provides. I'm really digging just about anything I pick up by Wrecked Machines, including the loads of remixes they do. Also liking what Rinkadink is doing; GMS, Filteria,Psysex, Domestic, Pixel, Vibrasphere, all have put out good tracks. Of course i shouldn't have to mention the more well known guys, like Infected Mushroom (some of their stuff is pretty silly but it all has great production values), old school guys Astral Projection, Hallucinogen, and the 'almost mainstream' Juno Reactor. Among the guys that walk the borders of the genre, i really enjoy Abakus (does a lot of down tempo but with psytrance production values) and Schpongled, who is full of completely genius silliness. I tend to favor less the Industrial-tinged psy and favor more the IDM-tinged psy. Basically, what i look for in the genre is for it to effectively draw me into a trance and than favorably bring me out of it at just the right points, so that when it drops back into the frame of reference i feel as if some dimensional warp just occurred.

Unfortunatley there are many many other great artists I haven't come across yet, but like i siad, its hard because i have sift through mounds of stuff i dont care much for. Most of the time it comes down to little subtleties in the production and composition that make all the difference in the way we take it in. Psytrance=Psychoacoustics.

In other realms, I have to agree with gl0tch on the gridlock joints.
I wasn't much a fan of the n-ron & leftenant mix. I just don't catch the vibe. Its ends up passing me by without any positive influence on my state of being.

The EP is finished, including liner art. I'll be trying to get it up on Kunaki tomorrow; the problem is that their upload tool only works right under Win XP, and we all know I'm an old fashioned 98SE lad. But, it occured to me since it's so simply to pop my hard drive out of the laptop (literally, one screw and a latch) that I could just put XP on another physical drive and just swap out when I need it. So probably I'll do that installation tonight, and work on getting the EP ironed out afterwards.
